Congratulations Gilgandra on 10 years of GREAT

Cutting the Cake

The Mayor of Gilgandra Shire, Doug Batten, cutting the celebratory cake with Liz McCutcheon, Librarian, Lyn Greenhalgh (the Creative Director of GREAT for the past 10 years) – and of course the irrepressible REaDing Bug.

Gilgandra REaDs Everywhere Around Town celebrated its 10th Anniversary this week with a celebratory dinner on Thursday night 21 May, followed by the GREAT Day on Friday. The GREAT Day celebrated the GREAT themes over the past 10 years, including REaDing – it’s Out of this World (drawing dinosaurs and learning to write their names), REaDY, Set, REaD relays, and Alison Lester’s ‘Are We There Yet?’, with huge murals of scenes across Australia. The town was a sea of red, from the main street to the preschools, schools, clubs and motels and everyone wearing red, to show that they were well read! Congratulations to the whole community of Gilgandra.

2015 Conference – Making Waves, Early Literacy and Collective Impact

Conference Group (1)
We have celebrated an inspiring Conference with 200 delegates from across Australia. Many delegates have already reported back on what they are planning and have already implemented from the Conference.

Conference highlights included a workshop for Mayors led by Wollongong’s Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery, inspiring keynote speakers, fun and thought provoking workshops, creative posters and many opportunities to network and share ideas and enjoy Wollongong’s warm hospitality.

Many many thanks to Paint the Gong REaD’s Conference Committee partners, led by the irrepressible Tracey Kirk-Downey,  Wollongong City Council’s Children’s Services Manager, and the hardworking University of Wollongong and TAFE student volunteers.

Annual ZEST Award – winners!

unnamedCongratulations to Paint Holroyd REaD and Paint Parra REaD  (in partnership with the Parramatta Eels) who have won a Zest Award in the category of Exceptional Community Partnership across a region. The award was for the read with a mate,  a program which focuses on encouraging fathers and father-like figures to read and engage with their children, learning about early literacy and brain development and the important roles they play in their child’s development.
